9 transport workers sued for ‘raping’ girl in Tangail

Nine transport workers have been sued on charge of raping a female garment worker in a running bus in Madhupur upazila of Tangail yesterday.

The victim’s husband filed the case with Dhanbari Police Station at 11:45pm yesterday, our Taingail correspondent reports quoting police.

Of the nine people, three bus staff including its driver were accused with the allegation of rape while six other transport workers and leaders were made accused of supporting the crime, Mojibor Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of the police station, told the correspondent.

The incident took place two days after two sisters, both in their teens, were allegedly gang-raped in Laxmipur on Tuesday.

Police already have arrested the three bus staffs –driver Habibur Rahman Noyon as main accused, supervisor Rezaul Karim Jewel and helper Abdul Khalek Bhutto -- from different places of the district on Friday night, Saleh Mohammed Tanvir, Superintendent of Police in Tangail, said today.

Law enforcers will seek permission from the court to take them on remand, he said.

Police also seized the bus during drives to arrest the six other accused of the case, the SP added.

The garment worker, aged around 23, was returning from a relative's house in Dhanbari upazila of Tangail to her place in Gazipur on a Binimoy Paribahan bus on Friday early morning, police said quoting the victim.

She was the only passenger in the bus that had three staffs on board, including the driver.

Around 6:00am, when the bus was speeding through the Tangail-Mymensingh highway in Madhupur upazila, the transport workers locked the gate and windows.

They also tied her hands and legs and gagged her. Three of the bus staff then took turns to rape the woman before forcing her out of the bus at a desolate place beside the road.

She was later given treatment at Tangail Medical College Hospital, police said.
