British girl dies at swimming pool in Egypt

A British child has tragically died after an accident at a swimming pool in Egypt.

The girl, from County Durham, was taken to hospital after the incident at the Jaz Makadi Aquaviva hotel in Hurghada on 21 December.

She died on Boxing Day after being flown home by UK tour operator Tui, previously known as Thomson.

The child, from Bishop Auckland, been treated in intensive care in Egypt before the decision was made to fly her back to Britain three days after the incident.

She had been holidaying in the resort on the North African country’s Red Coast the week before Christmas when the tragedy happened.
   



A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: “We are aware of reports of the tragic death of a British child after an incident in a swimming pool in Egypt. Assistance was provided in this case by the family’s tour operator.”

A Tui spokeswoman said: “We are aware of the sad incident at the Jaz Makadi Aquaviva hotel in Hurghada, Egypt that took place on 21st December 2017. We send our deepest condolences to the family and continue to offer every assistance possible.”

One person said in a Facebook post to the girl’s family: “Have no words… totally devastated for you all. Sleep tight princess. Taken far too soon xxx”

Another wrote: “Far too precious for this world… a special Angel I have no words I’m heart broken for you all xx”

Bishop Auckland deputy mayor, Dave Fleming, has also paid tribute, saying: “The thoughts and well-wishes of the town council go out to the family and we keep them in our prayers."
