‘Robber’ killed in Magura ‘gunfight’

A suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Salikha in Magura early Thursday.
The deceased was Obaidul Shikder, 32, son of Mezbauddin Shikder, of village Hatbaria.

Police recovered a pistol and three bullets from the spot. Five policemen including Salikha police sub-inspector Nasiruddin were injured during the gunfight, police claimed.

Magura assistant police super (circle) Shudarshan Roy said a gang of robbers was trying to commit robbery at Ramkantapur felling trees on Magura-Jessore highway around 1:45am.

Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the robbers opened fire on police prompting them to retaliate.

At one stage, the gang retreated from the spot and police found a bullet-wounded robber lying there.

He was taken to Magura General Hospital where physicians declared him dead.

Abu Zihad Md Fakhrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Salikha police station, said Obaidul was accused of seven cases filed with the police station.

However, locals said they did not hear any sound of gunfight.
