Jurgen Klopp wants to get revenge on Fraser Forster for his antics last season

Jurgen Klopp wants to get revenge on Fraser Forster

Liverpool take on Southampton on Saturday and the German manager has extra motivation because of what happened last season.

The Saints have been something of a bogey side for Klopp since he took over at the club.

They have met seven times and Liverpool have just one win to their name - a 6-1 victory in the League Cup back in 2015.

Last campaign, they faced off in the semi-finals of the same competition with the South coast club triumphing 1-0 in both matches.

But it’s not for that reason that Klopp really wants to beat Southampton this time around.

It’s because of something that happened during Liverpool’s 0-0 draw with the club back in May in their league clash.

The Reds desperately needed three points as they looked to finish in the top-four but they could only draw 0-0 with James Milner seeing a second-half penalty saved.

The goalkeeper that saved it was Fraser Forster but he angered Klopp with his behaviour before the penalty was taken.

The England goalkeeper stood over Milner, speaking to him as he placed the ball. He also appeared to put a divot of grass on the spot in an attempt to put his compatriot off.

After the draw, Klopp stated that “that's not how sportsmen should work” but he revealed just how angry he was in a press conference on Friday ahead of this weekend’s clash.

"I still remember the situation around the penalty," Klopp said.

"It looked like it was really strange and not completely fair. I don’t forget last season. It was a very decisive situation for us, they didn’t need the points.

"But it felt like someone kind of created stories so they were really spot on around the penalty and Foster was on fire. I think it’s a good moment to strike back."

The Liverpool Echo write that “Klopp will use Forster’s antics as motivation at Anfield.”

He certainly won’t forget what Forster did and neither will Milner. Luckily for Liverpool, it didn’t cost them a Champions League place.
