Major fire breaks out in Holborn with smoke billowing over street

Large fire broke out at a central London office block tonight, sending flames and smoke billowing into the sky.

Crowds of people were seen staring up into the sky as firefighters tried to bring the blaze in the four-storey block under control.

London Fire Brigade said they were called at 5.20pm to Clerkenwell Road, sending six fire engines to deal with the emergency.

Black smoke could be seen high above the rooftops with blue light emergency vehicles parked up in the road, as traffic came to a halt in the surrounding areas.

A Met Police spokesman said they attended to support the fire brigade.

Witness Dominique Egu said: ‘Fire on Clerkenwell Road, all traffic stopped and seems to come from a building surrounded by scaffolding.

‘London’s fire brigade is on the case so hopefully, no victims! Traffic at a standstill.’

Charlotte Hole said: ‘Absolutely blazing fire on Clerkenwell Road. Hoping no one is hurt, avoid this area! Fire trucks, traffic everywhere.’
